“And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.” (Romans 8:28)
I have a cousin who one of the most godly businessmen I have ever known. He owns a large glass manufacturing plant in South Carolina. He employs over 100 men. He is faithful with his giving. He is an honest boss. And he goes the extra mile to really help his employees. He has met with them personally to help them learn to budget and save for retirement. He genuinely cares about them and their families. And everyone knows that he walks with God.
Well, the recession has changed a lot of lives. And I just learned that my cousin has been forced to close down his business. As you can imagine, this is so painful for him. I think that mostly, he is concerned about those who have worked for him and have counted on his company to take care of their families.
This whole thing eerily reminded me of the time my father had to close his car business down about 25 years ago. I remember being almost angry with God. I prayed prayers like this: “God, look at how faithful Dad has been. He gives out of what he makes. He lets missionaries use cars for free while they are home on furlough. He sells pastors cars at his cost. He witnesses to customers. HOW CAN YOU LET THIS HAPPEN!?”
And yet, God did let it happen. In fact, He probably ordained it to happen. My father left the car business and became a chaplain in a prison in Maryland. Dad lived for another 13 years. And he worked as a chaplain until the day before he died. In the end, the last 13 years of Dad’s life were the most productive and the most fulfilling for him. He was never happier. And he was never used by God more than in those last 13 years.
We are living in uncertain times. Some of us will have to deal with changes–perhaps very painful changes. Embrace the sovereignty of God. Ask Him to use the hard times to make you even more fruitful and useful to Him. Remember, this recession did not catch God by surprise! Have a great week in the Lord!
